An unattractive old woman gives birth to a beautiful baby boy with an angelic face. However, the boy's sister (played by Julia Ormond) claims the child as her own. Once the absurd premise of a virgin giving birth is established, a series of unbelievable mystical events unfold, leading to the collapse of the world's order. She first claims the baby is the holy infant possessed by a god, then takes on the identity of the Virgin Mary, profiting from the holy child. When the sister falls in love with the bishop's son (played by Ralph Fiennes), she faces obstacles from the holy infant, resulting in the bishop's son's tragic death at the hands of a bull. To take revenge, the sister kills the holy infant, and upon hearing the news, the people demand severe punishment for the woman who has violated divine law. Thus, she is sentenced to death. Due to the laws at the time, a virgin could not be executed, so the Pope orders 208 soldiers to rape her. The sister dies in the act of violence, and the people joyfully dismember the holy infant, hoping to gain its protection.
