In the early morning streets of New York, the beautiful woman Holly (Audrey Hepburn) wanders in front of shop windows; she is the socialite of New York's high society. With a worship of money and materialism, yet still retaining her innocence and kindness, Holly is like New York's "Lady of the Camellias," earning her social income by charging fifty to one hundred dollars an hour. In her heart, there is another important goal: to marry a wealthy man. Holly's new neighbor is a writer named Paul (George Peppard), who dreams of becoming famous but lives off the support of a rich woman. Meeting Holly, Paul falls in love and tries every way to help her return to a normal life and proposes to her. However, Holly seems unwilling; in her mind, marrying someone like him and giving up her previous efforts is simply not worth it. But Holly stumbles along her path to happiness until one day she suddenly understands the meaning of happiness.
