Living in New Jersey, the mafia hitman "Ghost Dog" (played by Forest Whitaker) is of African descent but immerses himself in the spiritual world of Japanese samurai code, with "loyalty" as his highest creed. He is a reclusive figure, rarely smiling and usually communicating with his boss via carrier pigeon. Ghost Dog regards his boss Louis (played by John Tormey) as a father figure and does not hesitate to carry out orders with brutal efficiency, leaving a trail of blood. He is lonely but has friends to confide in, chatting in French with an African American ice cream vendor in the park, enjoying their unique conversations; or discussing insights about "Rashomon" with a little girl who loves to read. Ghost Dog lives in his own world, but significant changes are occurring around him. One day, he is abandoned by Louis and becomes a victim of gang rivalries...
