During World War II, Ma Dasan (played by Jiang Wen), a farmer from Guajiaotai Village in Hebei, China, lived a peaceful life under Japanese rule. One night, guerrillas kidnapped Japanese army soldier Hanaya Kobutaro (played by Takagawa Teruyuki) and translator Dong Hancheng, bound them in burlap sacks, and left them at Ma Dasan's home, instructing him to keep a close watch until they returned with people a few days later. Ma Dasan and the villagers nervously guarded the two, while Hanaya and Dong sent out several signals for help, all of which were diffused by the villagers. Half a year passed, and the villagers worried about exposure but didn’t dare to release Hanaya and Dong. Ma Dasan was eventually persuaded by Dong Hancheng to take Hanaya and Dong to the Japanese military police station in exchange for food. The Japanese military police officer, Jizuka Inokichi, was from the same hometown as Hanaya. He appeared polite to Ma and the others but secretly accused Hanaya of bringing shame to the imperial army and beat him. The military police team went to Ma's village for a festive food delivery with the villagers, but when the drinking got lively, a murderous intent suddenly emerged.
