The story takes place in Ireland during World War I. Rosie (Sarah Miles) is a lively and passionate girl who falls in love with a primary school headmaster named Charles (Robert Mitchum). Despite their significant age difference, Rosie recklessly pursues a life together with Charles, leading them to the altar. However, on their wedding night, a fierce argument breaks out between them. It is only then that Rosie realizes they are fundamentally incompatible in personality, but it's too late. Subsequently, Rosie encounters Major Randell (Christopher Jones), who fervently pursues her, and she falls in love once again. A series of unexpected events causes Rosie to become the target of the village's wrath, and the villagers imprison her, seeking to punish her for her perceived transgressions.
