Award-winning film at the 2016 Tokyo International Film Festival, featuring the story of a young Sami girl named Ella Maya growing up in northern Scandinavia. The Sami, also known as the Laplanders, are a nomadic people living in northern Scandinavia. They have their own language (Sami) and unique folk music (Joik), as well as traditional clothing, and they rely on reindeer herding for their livelihood. For a considerable period, countries like Sweden and Norway attempted to assimilate the Sami people through forced education, with officials even banning the use of the Sami language in schools and public places.
