It's quite common for fans to idolize star athletes, but it can easily spiral out of control. The film's protagonist, Gil Renard, is a knife salesman who has always looked up to African American baseball player Bobby Rayburn as his idol. As Bobby's sports career reaches its peak, Gil finds himself at his life's low point, facing divorce and unemployment. He completely invests his purpose for living into Bobby, going so far as to threaten, murder, and even kidnap Bobby's son to force him to hit home runs, causing a shocking uproar in the stadium. Production Behind the Scenes The film uses dramatic techniques to portray the distorted psychology of fans, with effects that are particularly striking. However, its slightly superficial handling of the imagery prevents its full impact from being realized. In 1981, there was a film of the same name that told the story of a deranged fan obsessively chasing a Broadway star, starring Lauren Bacall.
