In 1952 Ireland, societal norms were conservative. Young Philomena (Judi Dench) became pregnant out of wedlock and was sent by her family to a convent to perform hard labor, where she was allowed to spend only one hour a day with her beloved son, Anthony. When Anthony was three years old, the nuns forcibly took him away and sent him to a foster family in America. For the next fifty years, Philomena was consumed by her longing for her son. She shared her story with journalist Martin (Steve Coogan), who decided to join her on a journey to find him. This seemingly mismatched pair, with their starkly different personalities, embarks on an adventure that is not only about a mother’s search for her child, but also a testament to the power of friendship, balancing hope and disappointment. Philomena gradually learns about her son's extraordinary life and the little-known secrets he carries. Can her long-delayed love reach the lost Anthony after so many years? "Philomena" is adapted from BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith's non-fiction book "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee," based on a true story. The film revolves around a mother's transcontinental search for her son half a century later, packaging a tragic story in a comedic facade that evokes laughter and tears, while addressing themes of homosexuality, AIDS, and homophobia with due weight. "Philomena" won the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival and the highest honor of the LGBT community, the Brokeback Lion Award. It also received four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
