Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is a disillusioned writer from New York who arrives in Puerto Rico to work as a journalist at a struggling newspaper, living a life of drunken abandon. He meets the alluring Chenault (Amber Heard) at the hotel and is instantly captivated by her. Real estate tycoon Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) hires Kemp to write advertisements and offers him ample money and resources. Kemp discovers that Chenault is actually Sanderson's woman but finds himself unable to control his love for her. Sanderson arranges for Kemp to accompany Chenault, and Kemp resists the temptation of her beauty, refusing to elope with her. They visit an island to inspect properties, and at a party, a drunken Chenault dances passionately with a local man, inciting Sanderson's fury. The next day, Sanderson announces the termination of their collaboration and throws Chenault out of his house. Kemp takes Chenault in and resolves to expose Sanderson's dark real estate dealings, but the publishing house refuses to publish his work. He and his friends make a significant amount of money through cockfighting at a fair, but when they return with the money to print his manuscript, they discover the publishing house has already been auctioned off and is now abandoned. Kemp does not give up on his pursuit. Back in New York, he successfully exposes Sanderson, becomes a journalist, and lives happily with Chenault.
