The story takes place in 19th-century England, where Mary (played by Kate Winslet) is a paleontologist. However, this profession clearly does not allow her to live a comfortable life, and Mary is still struggling on the poverty line. In order to pay for her sick mother's treatment, she survives by collecting fossils on the beach to sell to tourists. One day, a man named Roderick (played by James McArdle) approaches Mary with a high salary, hoping that she can take care of his ill wife, Charlotte (played by Saoirse Ronan). Unable to resist the lure of money, Mary agrees. However, shortly after meeting Charlotte, their vastly different perspectives spark a clash, but as time goes on, they both see a world in each other that they have never experienced.
