The story takes place in the summer of 1988, where Elvin (played by Paul Rudd) and Lance (played by Emile Hirsch) are both colleagues and each other's only companionship. Their job is simple yet monotonous: painting road signs along a never-ending highway. Lance, accustomed to a lively life filled with lights and crowds, finds himself going mad in the quiet wilderness. In contrast, Elvin thrives in the peaceful environment, drawing inspiration from his focused work. Every day, he writes passionate letters to his girlfriend who lives far away, and coincidentally, she is Lance's sister. Amidst the loneliness, the two men frequently bicker, but it is these conflicts that bring vitality and motivation to their daily lives and work.
