Charlie (Tom Cruise) learns that his father has passed away, leaving behind a $3 million inheritance. However, he is shocked to find that the entire inheritance has been given to an older brother he doesn’t know, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Charlie has never heard of Raymond, and this revelation infuriates him. He decides to seek out his brother. To his surprise, Raymond lives in a mental institution; he has suffered from autism since childhood and was placed in the institution after their mother died. Charlie hatches a plan to take Raymond out of the facility, intending to trick him into giving up the inheritance. Raymond has peculiar habits and lives in his own fantasy world, displaying many strange behaviors. During their time together, Charlie discovers Raymond's astounding memory ability. He tries to leverage his brother's photographic memory to gain an advantage at the casino, winning a substantial amount of money, which allows Charlie to escape his life of poverty. What Charlie gains even more than money, however, is the slowly warming bond of family, a sibling connection that far surpasses the $3 million inheritance he originally sought.
