Saroo (played by Dev Patel) lives a dependent life with his mother, brother, and sister. Although they face poverty and hardships, the family supports each other and their life remains warm and filled with joy. One day, Saroo gets separated from his brother at a train station. By chance, he boards a train to Kolkata, where he becomes a homeless child on the streets and eventually ends up in a shelter. Fortunately, Saroo is adopted by a couple from Australia, John (played by David Wenham) and Sue (played by Nicole Kidman). Under their loving upbringing, Saroo grows into a promising young man. In school, he encounters a girl named Lucy (played by Rooney Mara), and they quickly develop a relationship. At a party, the food from his hometown triggers memories of his past, and he begins to have the desire to return home to search for his family.
