This film tells the tragic love story of a young couple in the midst of a war-torn era. Veronica (played by Tatyana Samojlova) and Boris (played by Aleksey Batalov) are a happy couple immersed in sweet romance, but everything beautiful begins to crumble with the outbreak of war. Boris enlists in the army, and Veronica's parents perish in an enemy air raid, leaving her heartbroken and forced to stay at Boris's father's home. His cousin seizes the opportunity to take advantage of her, and Veronica faces criticism from everyone. Under this double blow, Veronica contemplates ending her own life, yet she still desperately waits for Boris's return. When she learns of Boris's sacrifice, she falls into complete despair. After the war, while everyone else celebrates victory, Veronica arrives in the square holding flowers. At that moment, a flock of geese flies overhead, reminiscent of the beautiful times they once shared. This film caused a sensation upon its release, garnering worldwide acclaim with its stunning contrasts in light and shadow, exceptional cinematography, winning the Palme d'Or and Best Cinematography at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival.
