Based on Zhang Yu's "Appendicitis" and Chen Jun's "Boring Story." Zhao Youliang, the mayor of a certain city, holds significant power. However, his actions are always under the close supervision of his secretary and wife, making it difficult for him to act freely according to his own will, which frustrates him. In order to implement his superiors' directives for clean governance, he begins to often act independently, strolling through streets and alleys like an ordinary citizen. He feels relaxed, alert, and gains insights that he cannot obtain while sitting in the office. One day, Mayor Zhao evades the “concerns” of his secretary and wife. He immerses himself among the people to understand public sentiment, but after eating unhygienic food at a farmers' market, he suddenly suffers unbearable stomach pain and is sent to the hospital. He is diagnosed with appendicitis and requires hospitalization and surgery. Unexpectedly, while Mayor Zhao is ill in the hospital, it presents a good opportunity for those involved in corrupt practices. Firstly, the hospital becomes busily tense. The secretary of the hospital tries various means to curry favor with the mayor for a promotion, calling an emergency meeting to elevate the surgery to a level of “political significance”; the hospital director and attending physician each have their own agendas, leading to an intense struggle. During Mayor Zhao's hospitalization, visitors come to express their concern, sometimes forming long queues. To manage this, Mayor Zhao is forced to have his secretary and nurses implement a “registration” system to note the names, addresses, and gift descriptions of the visitors, instructing them to handle all gifts on the spot and return the money to the givers. There are those who express discontent with such corrupt practices; among them, two gift boxes were filled with heavy bricks. Additionally, giving injections to the mayor every day becomes a psychological burden for the nurses, as the quality of care directly impacts their future promotions and housing allocations. Therefore, Lily, who ranked highest in the housing allocation battle, reluctantly steps onto the battlefield, taking on the task of giving the mayor his injection. Due to nervousness, she accidentally sticks the needle into the mayor's hip without pushing the medicine, which is mistakenly seen as a successful painless injection. Faced with a social network formed by personal connections and flattery, Mayor Zhao engages in a clever resistance struggle.
