Angela (played by Janet Gaynor) has a mother who is seriously ill and urgently needs medication for treatment. Living in poverty, Angela, in desperation, resorts to theft to save her mother, which naturally leads to a police manhunt for her. Thus, Angela embarks on a journey of escape. Along the way, Angela arrives at a circus, where she changes her identity and becomes one of the performers, which helps her avoid the police. In the circus, she meets a young painter named Gino (played by Charles Farrell). Despite his talent, Gino is still an unknown artist, and Angela's presence inspires his creativity, helping him achieve success in his career. The two fall in love and decide to marry, but just as the wedding is about to take place, the police discover Angela's whereabouts.
