Halder (Max von Sydow) is a writer who is cynical about many aspects of contemporary society. Unable to integrate into society, he often locks himself away at home, and in loneliness and darkness, his spirit hovers on the brink of collapse. One day, by chance, Halder reads a book called "The Steppenwolf," and its contents enlighten him; he feels that this book was tailor-made for him. By coincidence, Halder meets bar girl Hermina, who introduces him to musician Pablo and girl Maria (Dominique Sanda). When Halder discovers that Hermina is involved with Pablo, jealousy takes over, leading him to irrationally kill Hermina.
