The skies over old Beijing are turbulent and changeable, filled with intrigue. Wang Lifafa (played by Yu Shizhi) is the young manager of the Yutai Teahouse in Beijing. He remembers his father's teachings, receiving guests from all walks of life with grace and attentiveness. Within the small teahouse, various types of people come and go: Uncle Song Er, who laments his fate while carrying birds (played by Huang Zongluo); the resolute Manchu Chang Siye, who mourns the nation's downfall (played by Zheng Rong); Qin Zhongyi, who is devoted to saving the country through industrial development (played by Lan Tianye); Liu Mazi, who engages in the inhumane trade of human trafficking (played by Ying Ruocheng); and the eunuch Pang, who plans to take a wife (played by Tong Chao)... one act follows another, as the teahouse showcases the vicissitudes and sorrows of the world... This film is adapted from the famous work by Lao She, and it won the Special Award at the 3rd Golden Rooster Awards in 1983 and the Special Award for Excellent Film from the Ministry of Culture in 1982.
