Spain. In the remote, impoverished, and forgotten town of Villar del Río, one day a government official suddenly arrives and announces that the Marshall Aid team will soon be arriving in the town, urging locals to host the American delegation according to the required standards. The news spreads, and the whole town is in an uproar. People from all social classes, professions, and factions start dreaming of golden opportunities, hoping to receive what they desire from the Americans. However, the Americans never arrive in the town, and people's fantasies and hopes turn into bubbles. Soon, Villar del Río returns to its former state of poverty and being forgotten. The film uses a sharp tone to satirize the social phenomena in Spain at the time and the deceptive nature of so-called "American aid." The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival (1953). It not only made Berlanga an internationally renowned director but also paved the way for foreign understanding of Spanish cinema and promoted the development of the Spanish film industry.
