In 1949, at the tail end of the Chinese Civil War, the naive Meng Shuan (played by Niuchengze) sought refuge with his fellow villager Li Desheng (played by Zhang Shi), who was serving as a cook in the military. Li allowed Meng Shuan to replace the identity of the deceased soldier Zuo Fugui to join the army, and also helped him adopt the name Liu Jinyuan. The two innocently followed the troops to Taiwan, known for its banana production, becoming members of the military propaganda team. However, they were suspected of being spies due to the assumed identity. Li Desheng was arrested first, and Meng Shuan, fearing repercussions, fled. Along the way, he encountered Yue Xiang (played by Zeng Qingyu) and her son. Yue Xiang's husband Li Qilin had passed away from illness, and to take care of them, Meng Shuan assumed her husband's identity, using the deceased's graduate certificate from Fu Jen Catholic University’s English department to find work. With a low educational background, Meng Shuan pretended to be a high-achieving English student, getting into all sorts of dangerous situations, and was recognized by his peers in the art troupe, leading him to rely on the introduction from an older brother who had changed his name and transferred units, finding temporary refuge in the home of a banana farmer. However, Desheng's mental health was unstable due to torture, which led to an incident that caused Meng Shuan's identity as a deserter to be exposed, putting his life in grave danger. Later, Meng Shuan passed the civil service exam using Li Qilin's identity, stabilizing his life and living with Yue Xiang to care for their child and the mentally unstable Desheng, enduring hardships without complaints. Forty years later, Taiwan allowed its people to visit relatives in mainland China. Yue Xiang's son found his grandfather in Shandong and brought him to Hong Kong, where he made a long-distance call for his parents to come and have a family reunion with his grandfather. Meng Shuan was panicked, fearing the secret of forty years would be uncovered, and hurriedly asked Yue Xiang to recall their past with her father-in-law. To his surprise, Yue Xiang was also an imposter. It turned out she had been rescued by a student from Fu Jen Catholic University's English department in the midst of chaos. This student had just lost his wife and was left with a baby while being sick himself, so Yue Xiang traveled with him to help take care of the baby. After the student's death, he left his graduation certificate to Yue Xiang. Meng Shuan and Yue Xiang cried together, sharing their unfortunate experiences, but still suppressed their inner grief as they braced themselves to meet their "father and son" after forty years apart. The "father and son," who had been separated for forty years, began to converse; although they were strangers to each other on the phone, they shared a common sorrow of separation. When Meng Shuan heard Li’s father mention the news of his mother’s death, he could no longer distinguish whose parents were being talked about, and he wept uncontrollably...
