Colin (Rupert Everett) and Mary (Natasha Richardson), whose emotional relationship has reached a deadlock, go on vacation to Venice in an attempt to change their lazy and uninteresting lives. One night, they encounter the local Mr. Robert (Christopher Walken), who reveals his childhood scars to the estranged couple and espouses extreme male chauvinism. Colin and Mary sense a certain indescribable threat, but their weariness of mundane life and desire for excitement compel them to accept Robert's invitation to his home. Robert's wife, Caroline (Helen Mirren), shares with Mary the complexities of her toxic relationship with Robert, leading to some ambiguous changes in Mary's psyche, and coupled with this unsettling stimulation, it bizarrely reignites the long-extinguished passion between her and Colin. Consequently, after encountering the Robert couple again, Colin and Mary uncontrollably follow them, even knowing they might become the victims of this aberrant love... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by British author Ian McEwan and directed by Paul Schrader, known as a key figure of the "New Hollywood" and famous for being Martin Scorsese's acclaimed screenwriter.
