The story begins in the early 16th century. Because Queen Catherine (Binnie Barnes) is unable to bear children, King Henry VIII (Charles Laughton) divorces her and marries a woman named Anne (Merle Oberon) as his new queen. However, ambitious Anne constantly plots to overthrow her husband and declare herself queen. When her conspiracy is revealed, Henry VIII personally sends her to the guillotine. After Anne's death, Henry VIII marries Jane (Wendy Barrie), but Jane dies in childbirth, leaving behind a poor baby, Wells (Miles Mander). Subsequently, the ministers wish for the king to marry a German princess, but this time the king rejects their request.
