A young writer from the southern United States, Stingo (played by Peter MacNicol), arrives in Brooklyn to make a living, where he meets his upstairs neighbors Sophie (played by Meryl Streep) and Nathan (played by Kevin Kline). They warmly express their desire to befriend the young writer, and Stingo gladly accepts their invitation. As they gradually develop a relationship, they establish a close and friendly bond with one another. During this process, Stingo learns that Sophie often cries due to Nathan's jealousy and rage, but she loves him deeply. What worries her the most is the thought of Nathan’s life being unimaginable without her. Sophie is Polish and came to America after World War II, where she met Nathan and they became dependent on each other. During the war, Sophie was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, while her father, husband, and children all perished in this conflict. How will Sophie’s spirit and body navigate the decisions related to her suffering and the tragic fates of her loved ones amidst the hellish genocide of war…
