Chika Robas is a sewer worker on the streets of Paris who hopes to one day become a street cleaner. Although he is very confident, he lacks religious belief and feels that God always disappoints him. Not far from where he works lives a girl named Dianne, who is not attractive and is often beaten by her vicious sister, Nana, for no reason. Whenever Nana feels cheated by life, she would whip Dianne. One time, Dianne fell into a gutter and was choked by Nana. Chika rushed out of the sewer to help Dianne drive Nana away. Later, the unfortunate Dianne decided to take her own life with Chika's knife, but he stopped her. When the police condemned Dianne, Chika once again rushed out to tell the officers that this girl is about to be his wife. The police doubted his words because Chika deeply sympathized with the girl and invited her to spend the night at his apartment. His apartment is on the seventh floor of a high-rise building, which Dianne called "Seventh Heaven." Meanwhile, Chika got the job he desired and wanted to do bigger and better things, while Dianne gained confidence in life because of Chika's self-assurance and no longer feared life. When she encountered her demon sister again, who wanted to take her away, she snatched Nana's whip and chased her off. Subsequently, war broke out, and Chika and Dianne were separated for a long time, only able to stay in touch through their longing for each other. One night, Chika was injured by a bomb and immediately sent a message to Dianne, who by then had become a munitions factory worker. Behind the Scenes This is a poignant love story based on Austin Strong's play, which caused a great sensation after its release in 1927, making one of its stars, Janet Gaynor, an overnight sensation and the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film's success even led to 20th Century Fox dubbing it in 1937 and modifying it into a sound film version. In this film, the emotional lives of the characters are expressed through the exquisite use of light and shadow. The expressionistic yet fully Americanized use of space breaks traditional viewpoints formed by various experiences, offering a brand new way of viewing that evokes poetic imagination. Even the later dubbed versions of the film demonstrate the directorial talent of Frank Borzage. This film by Borzage is not only a wonderful drama but can also be seen as an excellent alternative war movie.
