The story begins 20,000 years ago in Northern Europe during the Ice Age. Koda (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) is the son of a tribal leader. During a collective hunting expedition, he unfortunately falls off a cliff and goes missing. Everyone believes Koda is dead, but fortune shines upon him when a flood carries him away, saving his life. However, the water transports Koda far away from his tribe into the vast wilderness. Facing extremely harsh weather and severe resource shortages, Koda embarks on his journey home. On his journey, Koda encounters a lone wolf, who becomes his companion. He names it Alpha. Alpha is the leader of the wolf pack, and through his interactions with Alpha, Koda learns many survival skills in the wilderness while awakening the wolf within himself.
