Since the death of her father five years ago, Akila Anderson (played by Keke Palmer) has slowly become the "problem girl." She skips classes, pulls pranks, and is always at odds with her mother, Tanya (played by Angela Bassett), leaving teachers powerless. In fact, everything eleven-year-old Akila does stems from her inner loneliness and nostalgia for her father. She begins to immerse herself in spelling games and gradually discovers her talent for them. Her mother, busy supporting the family and often neglecting Akila, does not understand and believes she is wasting her time. Fortunately, Akila receives support from a mysterious professor (played by Laurence Fishburne) and wins the school spelling competition, earning the chance to compete in the national spelling bee. With talent and hard work, Akila finds confidence and herself in the spelling competitions, and she encounters a formidable opponent—an Asian boy. Their initial rivalry develops into mutual respect...
