At Christmas in 1907, the Ekdahl family celebrates a joyful Christmas dinner with two generations together. However, the good times don’t last long. The young protagonist Alexander (played by Bertil Guve) and his sister Fanny's (played by Pernilla Allwin) father Oscar (played by Allan Edwall) suddenly suffers a stroke during the rehearsal of "Hamlet," and in his last moments, he entrusts the grand theater he has worked so hard to build to his wife Emily (played by Ewa Froling). A year later, Emily remarries the cold and cruel young bishop Edward. Edward's mother and sister are domineering and harsh, and the conflicts between Alexander and his stepfather intensify, yet he can only endure in silence. When their grandmother Helena (played by Gunn Wallgren) learns of the situation, she secretly seeks help from an old friend, ultimately allowing the children to regain their freedom. Emily also escapes from the bishop's home, and the family is reunited, enjoying their time together once more. This film won several awards at the 56th Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Foreign Language Film.
