This film is divided into two episodes and tells the story of Hu Yuyin (Liu Xiaoqing), a beautiful woman known as "Sister Furong," in Furong Town, located at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces, during the "Four Cleanups Movement" and the "Cultural Revolution." In 1963, thanks to her enthusiastic and attentive service, the rice tofu stall run by Hu Yuyin and her husband Gui Gui (Liu Linian) gradually became the most bustling sight at the morning market. The couple lived frugally and accumulated a considerable fortune. The town's party secretary, Li Mangeng (Zhang Guangbei), who was also Hu Yuyin's brother-in-law, the grain station director Gu Yanshan (Zheng Zaishi), and their neighbors were all pleased for them. Just as they were ready to build a new house and improve their lives, they encountered the "Four Cleanups Movement." The former manager of the state-owned restaurant, now the county's commercial bureau section chief Li Guoxiang (Xu Songzi), who had always been jealous of Hu Yuyin, teamed up with the ne'er-do-well Wang Qiusheng (Zhu Shibin) to label her as a "counter-revolutionary landlord," sending her to clean the streets alongside the former county cultural center director, now called "Qin Dianzai," a "rightist" Qin Shutian (Jiang Wen). Gui Gui passed away. During the movement, Li Mangeng betrayed Hu Yuyin, while Gu Yanshan consistently lived honestly as an old revolutionary soldier. In 1966, with the onset of the "Cultural Revolution," the absurdity of the world could be glimpsed through the changing roles of Li Guoxiang and Wang Qiusheng. While cleaning the streets together, Hu Yuyin blamed her tragic fate on Qin Shutian, who had sung a congratulatory song deemed counter-revolutionary at her wedding and had written a congratulatory couplet considered counter-revolutionary when her new house was completed. Qin Shutian didn't defend himself against Hu Yuyin's resentment; instead, he often helped her secretly. Gradually, feelings developed between them, and they planned to become a family and live well, but the road ahead was fraught with danger. During their toughest times, Gu Yanshan never forgot to lend a helping hand.
