George (Charles Boyer) is a Frenchman of Romanian descent who is currently making a living selling his body in Mexico. His biggest dream is to one day go to America, obtain American citizenship, and escape his pathetic past. To this end, he has devised a meticulous plan. George decides to marry an American woman so that he can easily become an American, and then kick this poor woman aside to bring his true love, Anita (Paulette Goddard), to America to live together.
