Sonia (played by Renée Zellweger) is a bright and cheerful girl with a head full of quirky ideas. Destiny connects her with a man named Mendel (played by Glenn Fitzgerald), and they fall in love at first sight, quickly stepping into the realm of marriage. Mendel is a devout follower of Judaism, and everything in his life follows God's will. Soon, Sonia discovers that what Mendel needs is simply a "wife" as defined by traditional notions, rather than her as a real person. As time goes by, the distance between Sonia and Mendel grows, and a jewelry store clerk named Raymond (played by Allen Payne) comes closer to Sonia, leading them to inevitably fall in love.
