Erin (played by Hilary Swank) takes her first teaching job in a terrible classroom at Wilson High School. Here, she faces a nightmare of students: they waste their time, aimlessly pass the hours, and treat school as a playground until they turn 18. Adding to the chaos, the students come from different racial backgrounds and various lower-class groups, forming cliques and fighting among themselves. Erin strives to keep hatred out of the children's hearts and reduce their hostility toward each other, but as a white teacher, she encounters strong walls of resistance from the kids. Her educational ideals hit obstacles again and again in reality. Are the children's troubled minds beyond help? Can their future be illuminated under Erin's patient guidance? With a heavy burden on her shoulders, Erin has only one book that might inspire the children, "The Diary of Anne Frank," and a sincere and passionate heart to lead the lost kids toward the light.
