Ming Dynasty story: The late daughter of the Taiyuan garrison commander, Chen Xiuying, and her mother open a teahouse for a living. Her father left behind an iron bow, stating in his last words that whoever can draw the bow can marry his daughter. The son of Taiyuan's general, Shi Xulong, wants to marry Xiuying but is beaten and chased away by her mother. Chen's mother sets a trap, encountering the general's officer, Kuang Zhong, who advises her and arranges a return to the teahouse. Xiuying falls in love with Kuang, who can also draw the bow, and the two compete in martial arts before marrying. Shi Xulong and his son conspire to have Kuang and his father disarmed but secretly bribe a guard to abduct them. Kuang and his father are exiled to Yunnan for losing face. Shi's son then tries to force Xiuying to marry him, and she pretends to agree before killing him and escaping with her mother to seek help from Kuang's friend, Wang Fu. However, when Fu arrives to visit Kuang, he is captured by Shi's men. Wang, knowing of Fu's injustice, pardons him. Xiuying disguises herself as a man using Fu's name and encounters Guo Bai's daughter, Cui'e, whom she promises to marry. Xiuying pretends to agree on three matters and, after the formalities, takes command of the troops to attack Taiyuan and avenge Shi Xulong. Wang orders Fu to lead the battle, where the real and fake Fu fight to a standstill. Wang then calls back Kuang and his son, and Kuang reunites with Xiuying as husband and wife.
