40-year-old Erika Kohut (Isabelle Huppert) appears to be an elegant piano teacher, with a unique appearance and outstanding temperament, but she is extremely strict with her students. At the same time, her mother is authoritarian and unreasonable, and the endless torment prevents Erika from expressing her various desires. Thus, Erika resorts to self-harm with a razor in the bathroom for pleasure, smells her underwear to release her desires, and even rents pornographic videotapes. When the handsome and impulsive 18-year-old Walter (Benoît Magimel) bursts into her life, everything changes. They provide solace for each other, and Erika believes she has finally found her happiness, yet the young Walter eventually grows tired of this relationship...
