Władysław Szpilman (played by Adrien Brody) is a pianist for a radio station in Poland. As World War II is about to break out, his entire family is forced into the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw. Amidst the chaos of war, his family and relatives are ultimately killed by the Nazis, while Szpilman himself suffers various humiliations and torment. He narrowly receives help from a friend, finding a temporary place to hide. As the war intensifies, his friend is compelled to leave him behind to return home in search of a safe place to raise his children. At this point, Szpilman is seriously ill but must still flee from the manhunt. In a loft amidst the ruins, he meets a German officer who requests him to play a piano piece. The beautiful music awakens a sense of compassion in the German officer, who covertly helps Szpilman until the Soviet liberation of Poland arrives... The film is adapted from the autobiographical novel "Death City" by Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman.
