Scottish single mother Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) gave up speaking at the age of six and expresses her deep emotions only through the piano. In 1852, McGrath marries Stewart (Sam Neill) and brings her piano with her to New Zealand. However, Stewart's manpower is insufficient, and they are forced to abandon the heavy piano on the beach. Stewart's friend George Baines (Harvey Keitel) falls in love with McGrath and offers eighty acres of land in exchange for the piano. Stewart hands over the piano and instructs McGrath to teach Baines how to play. In the piano lessons, Baines suggests that if McGrath allows certain outrageous things to happen during the lessons, she can trade one lesson for one piano key...
