A newspaper reporter, Yuan Yongding (played by Tony Leung), encounters a woman named Ruohua (played by Anita Mui), who has come to place a missing person advertisement. He accidentally discovers that this alluring woman is actually a ghost. Fifty years ago, she was a renowned courtesan who met a wealthy scion, the Twelfth Young Master Chen Zhenbang (played by Leslie Cheung). Ruohua fell deeply in love with this romantic young man, and they reached a point of discussing marriage.
