In 1937, the Japanese army invaded Nanjing. Amid the chaos of war, the ancient capital of six dynasties turned to ruins, and many Chinese soldiers and civilians were trapped in the city. A small contingent of the Nationalist Army's German military training unit, under the command of Captain Li (played by Tong Dawei), rescued a group of female students from a church school from the hands of the Japanese, but Captain Li and his men lost their opportunity to leave the city. The surviving students, including Shu Juan (played by Zhang Xinyi), returned to the Winchester Church, accompanied by John Miller (Christian Bale), an American hired to collect the body of a priest. At this time, refugees were flocking into the safety zone and church looking for shelter in Nanjing, and fourteen women of the night forced their way into the church seeking refuge. Among them, the English-speaking Yu Mo (played by Ni Ni) hoped to use John's identity to provide more protection for the group. The walls of the church could not stop the iron hooves of the Japanese army, and the people inside the church would face a choice between life and death…
