Young and beautiful West German girl Katharina Blum (played by Angela Winkler) has a failed marriage. She accidentally meets British soldier Ludwig Götten (played by Jürgen Prochnow) at a relative's party, and they fall in love at first sight, spending a romantic night together. However, early the next morning, the military police break in and start searching, and Götten has vanished. It turns out that Götten is a robbery suspect wanted by the police, and Katharina is arrested as an accomplice. The police's manhunt causes a stir, and reporter Tötges (played by Dieter Laser) pries into Katharina's private life, collecting information. He provides the material to Sheriff Bäumer (played by Mario Adorf), who uses it as evidence to subject Katharina to severe interrogation. Katharina, who once lived a peaceful life, suddenly falls to the depths... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the famous German writer and Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll.
