Sal Paradise (played by Sam Riley) is a young writer in search of inspiration and longing for adventure, while Dean Moriarty (played by Garrett Hedlund) is a charming and reckless young man, a restless juvenile delinquent with a few stints in prison, who has married a wild 16-year-old girl named Marylou (played by Kristen Stewart). However, Sal is captivated by Dean's passionate lifestyle, and Dean admires Sal's sophistication and intellect. After meeting three young people, all enamored with freedom, they quickly decide to abandon their lives and hit the road together. They hitchhike, smoke marijuana, sing when they're high, and ponder deeply when they're drunk. Traveling across the highways of America, they revel in their freedom, search for identity, and burn with youth. The film is adapted from American writer Jack Kerouac's autobiographical novel of the same name, which is revered as the "bible of the Beat Generation."
