David Lurie (played by John Malkovich) teaches at a university in Cape Town, but in his fifties, he faces punishment from the school for seducing and having an affair with a female student. During a hearing organized by the school, David openly admits to the accusations but shows no signs of remorse. Forced to resign, David goes to his daughter Lucy's (played by Jessica Haines) farm in a small mountain town, where he unexpectedly encounters a home invasion and three criminals who assault his daughter. David feels immense guilt over his powerlessness, but Lucy's cold demeanor regarding the incident makes him furious, especially as she continues to make concessions to their Black neighbor, which he finds even more baffling. David feels ashamed, living as if he were a dog... The film is adapted from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name and won Best Film at the Middle Eastern Film Festival in 2008, as well as the International Critics' Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
