Walter Kowalski (Clint Eastwood), a retired Ford factory worker who served in the Korean War, lives alone in a low-income Asian immigrant neighborhood in a small town in Michigan after the death of his wife. His neighbors are a large Hmong family, and a pair of siblings catches Walter's attention. The older sister, Sue (Ahney Her), is humorous and talkative, gradually becoming friends with the stubborn and somewhat racist old Walter; while her silent younger brother, Thao (Bee Vang), is forced by a distant cousin to join a local Hmong gang, and on his first mission, he is tasked with stealing Walter's cherished 1972 Ford Gran Torino. Failing to steal the car, Thao is coerced into working for Walter to make amends, unexpectedly forming a deep friendship with him. Meanwhile, the local Hmong gang refuses to back down, leading Walter to decide what action to take for the safety of Sue and Thao, as well as the peace of the community. This film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song ("Gran Torino").
