This film can be seen as a sequel to Wim Wenders' "The State of Things." In the previous film, director Friedrich (played by Patrick Bauchau) comes to Lisbon to shoot material, inviting sound recordist Philip (played by Rüdiger Vogler) to help collect sounds for his silent film. After receiving the invitation postcard, Philip heads to Lisbon but cannot find Friedrich, only some mysterious clues left behind. Based on some film footage the director left about a small town in Lisbon, Philip goes there to gather sounds. He wanders through the streets and alleys, recording various sounds. During his time in Lisbon, he meets a singer of film soundtracks, adding a touch of romance to his life. In the end, he finds Friedrich and learns about the director's departure: faced with the impact of commercial imagery, the director has become numb to images, unable to find inspiration and passion for shooting, and thus invents a method of blind filming, carrying the camera on his shoulder, moving freely while allowing the lens to capture the images around him, believing that this method is the truest way to document a place—objective and real.
