Because the elders in his family forced him to become the son-in-law of the young widow Duan Xifeng (Lü Liping), a young man from Lao Jing Village, Sun Wangquan (Zhang Yimou) intended to elope with his girlfriend Zhao Qiaoying (Liang Yujin), who returned to the village to farm after failing the college entrance exam. However, he had to put his plan on hold when his father was killed in an explosion down the well and he obeyed the command to become Duan Xifeng's husband. After that, Sun Wangquan focused all his energy on digging wells and eventually determined the location for the first well in Lao Jing Village using scientific methods.
