Mechanic Frank (played by Jack Nicholson) is broke and is taken in by a Greek shopkeeper named Nick in a small town near Los Angeles. Nick's young wife, Cora (played by Jessica Lange), catches Frank's strong interest, and Cora is also weary of her alcoholic Greek husband. The two soon become involved while Nick is away in the city and decide to run away together. However, Frank’s gambling addiction forces a change in their plans. Cora initially wants to kill the drunken Nick but only severely injures him. After Nick is discharged from the hospital, Cora and Frank concoct another plan and finally succeed. The insurance company, unwilling to pay for Nick's accidental death, gathers evidence to prove Cora and Frank's guilt. Fortunately, a lawyer cleverly exploits the conflicting interests between different insurance companies, allowing the couple to avoid conviction. Although Frank and Cora scheme against each other while in prison, they eventually come together. Their life after taking over the shop is bland until one day a man arrives to blackmail them... This film is the fourth film adaptation of James M. Cain's original novel.
