In the 1970s, in Harlem, Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington) is the driver for gangster boss Johnson. After Johnson dies unexpectedly, Frank seizes this hard-won opportunity to reorganize the distribution of power in the underground world, successfully rising to power and taking over the boss's business, controlling the drug trade. During this time, he travels to the Golden Triangle in Southeast Asia to smuggle high-purity heroin, assembling his family members and gathering a group of loyal subordinates, as a dark force begins to rise. On the other side, police officer Richie Roberts (played by Russell Crowe) experiences a broken family and feels alienated from mainstream society, spending his days looking disheveled on the streets. He gradually realizes the turbulent changes within the drug circle and begins a secret investigation. As the investigation deepens, the distance between Roberts and Lucas narrows, and the inevitable confrontation arises between two men with similar temperaments who appreciate each other...
