In 1933, New York gangster Noodles (Robert De Niro) is hunted down after informing Police Chief Harlowen (Bruce Dern) and causing the deaths of three accomplices. Before fleeing, he opens a suitcase containing the gang's funds, but it only holds newspapers. In 1968, now under a new identity, Noodles receives a letter from a synagogue regarding the reburial of friends. He contacts the rabbi and learns the letter was sent eight months ago; his three accomplices have been reinterred in a luxurious cemetery. Noodles returns to New York and seeks out his old friend Max (Larry Lupp), but learns nothing. In casual conversation, Noodles asks about Max's sister Deborah (Elizabeth McGovern) and discovers she has become a famous actress. In fact, they had mutual feelings for each other when they were younger, but Deborah (Jennifer Connelly) had her ambitions, rationally keeping street thug Noodles (Scott Tiler) at bay. Noodles finds a key at the cemetery and uses it to open the storage locker where he kept the suitcase years ago. This time, the suitcase is filled with hundred-dollar bills and a note that reads "advance payment for the next job."
