Sergey (played by Valentin Popov), Nikolai (played by Nikolai Gubenko), and Slava (played by Stanislav Lyubshin) are childhood friends who grew up together. As they reached adulthood, they all chose to serve their country in the military, but after their discharge, the three men went on to pursue different paths in life. Sergey has always wanted to attend the Power Institute, but after the unfortunate death of his father in an early war, he had to support his mother and sister Vira (played by Svetlana Svetlichnaya), forcing him to give up on his educational dreams. Slava entered marriage early, but it brought him only pain and conflict. Nikolai's personality is slightly more immature than the other two; he seems carefree, laughing all day without any worries.
