Frances (Chloe Grace Moretz) is a kind-hearted and innocent college student. One day, she finds a handbag on the subway and, following the address on a note inside, she knocks on Greta's (Isabelle Huppert) door. Greta thanks Frances for her kindness, and during their conversation, Frances learns that she is a widow living in loneliness, which evokes her compassion. Thus, Frances and Greta begin to see each other more frequently, and their relationship grows closer, even being perceived as mother and daughter. One day, Frances accidentally discovers many handbags at Greta's home that are identical to the one she found, each containing notes with addresses, leading Frances to realize that she seems to have fallen into a trap set by Greta.
