Shakespeare's romantic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" has been adapted for the screen 12 times since its release in 1595. The 1968 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli has been regarded as a classic since its debut. In the 15th century city of Verona, Italy, there are two prestigious and sharply opposing families that constantly engage in bloody conflicts. Romeo (Leonard Whiting) from the Montague family and Juliet (Olivia Hussey) from the Capulet family fall in love at first sight and secretly marry. Juliet's cousin provokes Romeo and is accidentally killed, leading to Romeo's exile from the city. To escape her family's forced marriage, Juliet fakes her death with the help of a priest. When Romeo learns of this, he rushes back, only to find Juliet asleep in her tomb. In despair, he drinks poison and dies. Upon waking and finding her lover dead, Juliet stabs herself with a dagger in her anguish.
