Princess Anne (Audrey Hepburn) from a European country visits Rome, burdened by state affairs, but weary of protocol. One night, exhausted, she sneaks out to enjoy the night scenery and unexpectedly meets newspaper reporter Joe (Gregory Peck). The two have a delightful time together and even spend the night at Joe's home. However, Joe inadvertently discovers the princess's true identity and decides to create an exclusive news story. So, with his friend and photographer Irving (Eddie Albert), he takes the princess around Rome and secretly captures many candid photos of her life. Yet, as Joe spends more time with the princess, he unknowingly falls in love with her. To protect her image, Joe painfully decides to abandon his chance at fame and gives the photos to the princess. After experiencing a day of vacation in Rome, Princess Anne comes to realize her responsibility to her country and resolutely returns to the embassy, decisively giving up love for the sake of her duties.
